Everything You Need To Know About Uterine Fibroids
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), around 80% of women have fibroids by the age of 50. However, most women don’t even know they have them because they have no symptoms. But what are uterine fibroids?
Simply put, uterine fibroids are abnormal growths that develop on a woman’s uterus. In most cases, these growths are usually benign. One of the things that you need to keep in mind is that while in some cases women can have large periods and severe abdominal pain, in other cases there are no symptoms or signs.
What Causes Uterine Fibroids?
The truth is that no one knows exactly why uterine fibroids develop. However, some factors tend to influence their formation:

Genetics play an important role in fibroids in uterus. So, in case your sister or mother has them, you may be more prone to develop them as well.

Hormones are another factor that tends to lead to the formation of uterine fibroids. During each menstrual cycle, progesterone and estrogen are produced by your ovaries and their main job is to regenerate your uterine lining. This process can also stimulate the growth of uterine fibroids.
#3: Pregnancy:
During pregnancy, women tend to produce more progesterone and estrogen which can lead not only to the development but also to the fast growth of fibroids in uterus.
Uterine Fibroids Symptoms
As we already mentioned, not all women who have uterine fibroids experience symptoms. However, when they do, some of the most common ones include:
- pain in the lower back or pelvis
- heavy bleeding during or between periods and, sometimes, it can include blood clots
- menstruation usually lasts longer than usual
- increased urination
- increased menstrual cramping
- enlargement or swelling of the abdomen
- pain during intercourse
One of the things that you need to know is that your symptoms may also depend on the size of the fibroids as well as on where they are located.
In case you’re going through menopause and the fibroid is very small, you may not experience any symptoms since it tends to decrease during and after menopause.
Getting The Diagnosis
In case you are experiencing some of these symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with a gynecologist so that he can do a pelvic exam. With this exam, he will be able to determine if you have uterine fibroids, and if you do, he will determine the shape and size of the fibroids.
Some of the exams that your gynecologist can perform include:
#1: A Pelvic MRI:
This is an imagery test that will show images of your ovaries, uterus, and other pelvic organs.
#2: An Ultrasound:
This is an exam that uses sound-waves to reproduce images of your uterus on a screen. Your gynecologist can also prescribe a transvaginal ultrasound where a wand is inserted into the vagina.
No matter the diagnostic exam that your gynecologist uses, you need to know that they are not painful at all and they tend to be fast.
